Downsizing is a different job to an ordinary clearance, because almost everything in the house belongs to someone who is still standing there. It takes patience, and it takes a crew who will not make you feel rushed about a wardrobe you have had since 1982.
What usually happens
- We visit and talk it through. What is coming with you, what is going to family, what needs to go.
- We work in stages if you prefer. Attic and garage first, then the spare rooms, then the rest nearer the move.
- We handle the family distribution. Items going to sons, daughters or grandchildren can be dropped locally in the same run.
- We clear the remainder and leave the house ready for sale or handover.
Moving into nursing or assisted care
These clearances often need to happen quickly, and often the person moving cannot be there. We will work from a list, send photographs of anything we are unsure about, and keep the family informed throughout. Nothing with any personal significance is disposed of on a judgement call.
Charity and reuse first
Most of what comes out of a downsizing clearance is in good condition. Furniture, kitchenware, books, bedding and clothing go to reuse wherever there is somewhere to take them.
